Episode 1 of the Inclusive Narratives of Management series, produced by the Management History Division of the Academy of Management. Dr. Baniyelme Zoogah delved into Africa's rich management history, tracing its evolution from ancient trade-centric civilizations to the influence of European colonialism. He highlighted the shift towards Western management models and made a compelling case for reintegrating Africa's indigenous business principles. Dr. Zoogah's insights emphasized the need for a contextually relevant approach in Africa, one that could also address global imbalances in management scholarship. A truly enlightening exploration of Africa's past contributions and their implications for the future. Speaker Bio: Baniyelme D. Zoogah, PhD is an Associate Professor of Management at McMaster University's DeGroote School of Business in Ontario, specializing in Human Resources and Organizational Behavior (HR/OB). With experience as a Visiting Professor in Ghana, Germany, and South Africa, he has authored multiple publications, including books on Strategic Followership and "Ethnos Oblige: Theory and Evidence." His paper, “Academic Athena: Writing in Africa in Management and Organization Science,” earned the Best International Paper award (MH Division) at the 2022 Academy of Management Annual Meeting. Dr. Zoogah is also the Past President of the Africa Academy of Management. Moderator Bio: Leon C. Prieto, PhD serves as a Professor of Management & the Director of the Center for Social Innovation & Sustainable Entrepreneurship in the College of Business at Clayton State University. He also serves as a Research Fellow at Cambridge Centre for Social Innovation - University of Cambridge, Judge Business School. He has published articles in respected academic and practitioner journals such as Academy of Management Learning & Education, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Management History, Harvard Business Review, and MIT Sloan Review. His first book (coauthored with Dr. Simone Phipps) is entitled African American Management History: Insights on Gaining a Cooperative Advantage.
